Marty Conley, Band Leader, Trumpet

Marty Conley, born and raised in Ohio, took up the trumpet at age 14 and made music his life’s work. After traveling much of the world as a career Navy musician, Master Chief Petty Officer (Ret.) Conley managed advanced bandleader and arranging programs at the Armed Forces School of Music in Little Creek, Va. for over 12 years. He then “retired” to the thriving 1970’s show bands of Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe, playing lead trumpet for top artists including Lou Rawls, Mel Torme, and Doc Severinson. Upon “retiring” again to San Diego, Marty assumed leadership of The Big Band Express, where he has played lead trumpet and arranged music prolifically for 15 years. Marty resides in Santee with his wife Dolores.

Robert Maddalena, Trumpet

Robert "Bob" Maddalena has been performing on trumpet with San Diego Jazz groups since moving to the city in 2000. His Jazz Trumpet career began when he was in High School. He was a professor of Music for 38 years in California Schools, including the last 25 years at Merced College. Bob earned a Masters Degree in Music before beginning his teaching career. He lives in Downtown San Diego with his wife, Marsha. In addition to Jazz, Bob enjoys golf and travel.

Jim Napier - Trumpet

Jim Napier comes from a musical family.  His father was a professional musician and played on Network TV out of Detroit including programs like the Soupy Sales show and the Ed McKenzie Variety Hour.  Seeing stars like Bobby Darren and Frank Sinatra live at the WXYZ studios made an impression at an early age.  Jim started trumpet lessons when he was 12 with some of the best players in the city of Detroit.   Jim attended  Michigan State University and was a member of the MSU Jazz Band.  After graduating Jim took a job in San Diego at Solar Turbines as a Research Engineer.  He has been actively involved in music in San Diego over 40 years and has played in the San Diego County Symphony, The Del Bybee Big Band and The Ira Liss Big Band.  He currently is a member of the Coronado Big Band, the Crown Island Jazz Band, the Midnight Miles Quintet and of course, The Big Band Express.
