Jerry Kaehr, Piano
Born and raised in Indiana, Jerry studied piano, saxophone and voice in secondary school, and went on to complete a BA and MA in Music Education. During his career of 35 years, he taught music in Wisconsin at all levels from kindergarten through university. He was also very involved in church music, directing music programs and leading worship from the piano. He has played in many small groups and had his own quartet for several years in Wisconsin. Jerry and his wife, Linda, have been retired in San Diego since 1996, and shortly after, Jerry joined the Big Band Express. They have two children and five grandchildren living in Wisconsin and Indiana.
Paul Lasker, Bass
Paul is a San Diego native having been born and raised in La Jolla. Originally a violin player, he switched to bass as a teenager. He has played a variety of genres including rock, jazz, pop, show tunes and big band. Paul has held down the low end of the Big Band Express for over 15 years. He currently lives in Del Mar with his wife Elizabeth and daughter Rachel. When he isn't playing bass, he and Elizabeth sell Real Estate with Del Mar Real Estate Services.
Kay Mundell, Vocals
Kay Mundell comes from a musical family, and it seems that she has sung all her life, beginning in grammar school in rural Nebraska and continuing up to the present. Kay had the good fortune to grow up in the golden age of swing. Over the years she has performed in a variety of venues with choral groups, dance bands and jazz combos. Whether singing professionally or for her own enjoyment, she has loved every minute of it! A comparative newcomer to Big Band Express, Kay joined the band in 2007. In addition to BBX, she performs with several other dance bands in the San Diego metropolitan area. Kay is also an accomplished portrait artist, working in oils, pastels, charcoal and watercolors. After years of moving around the country as a Navy wife, she now resides in Chula Vista with her husband Jack.
Mike Masessa, Drums
Mike grew up in Newark N.J. and started playing drums at age 10. He took lessons from prominent New York/New Jersey drummer Carl Wolf and later studied under jazz great Joe Morello. Mike attended the music school at Jersey City State College, where he studied under Nicholas Cerrato, a successful broadway show percussionist and the principle percussionist with the Hudson Valley Symphony. Mike moved to San Antonio TX. in 1976 to play with The Jim Cullum Jazz Band. While there he toured and played many Jazz festivals throughout the United States and Europe, recorded two albums as well as working five nights a week at The Landing on the River Walk with Jim Cullum and the band. In 1979 Mike left Jim's band and moved to Orlando, Fl. Hewent to work at Disney World, Circus World, Church Street Station with the Rosie Oʼ Gradyʼs Goodtime Jazz Band, Bill Allred Productions and also played and made several recordings with long time friend, clarinetist and jazz artist, Allan Vacheʼ. Mike moved to Branson, Missouri in 1994 to become the Bandleader/Conductor of the Ragtime Lilʻ, Banjo, Banjo Show at the Thunderbird Theater. The following year Mike accepted a position with the Delta Queen Steamboat Co. and spent the next eight years cruising up and down the rivers of Americas Heartland on the Mighty Mississippi Queen playing with the MQ Show Band and The Paddlewheel Trio. Mike now resides in San Diego, CA. and works at the Lawrence Welk Theater doing eight shows a week.
