Kay Mundell comes from a musical family, and it seems that she has sung all her life, beginning in grammar school in rural Nebraska and continuing up to the present. In her youth she played tuba, trombone and piano, but her first love was singing. Kay had the good fortune to grow up in the golden age of swing. Like millions of others, she thrilled to the music of Tommy Dorsey, Harry James, Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. She developed her singing style singing along with such big band vocalists as Ella Fitzgerald, Helen Forrest, Peggy Lee, Helen O'Connell and Doris Day. Over the years she has performed in a variety of venues with choral groups, dance bands and jazz combos. Whether singing professionally or for her own enjoyment, she has loved every minute of it! A comparative newcomer to Big Band Express, Kay joined the band in 2007. In addition to BBX, she performs with several other dance bands in the San Diego metropolitan area. Kay is also an accomplished portrait artist, working in oils, pastels, charcoal and watercolors. After years of moving around the country as a Navy wife, she now resides in Chula Vista with her husband Jack.
